Exhibition “Gaillard & Claude”

27/02/2022 h 18/09/2022 F Add to the calendar 2022-02-27 2022-09-18 Europe/London Exhibition “Gaillard & Claude”

As critical yet amused observers of the social imaginary of our time, since their partnership began in the early 2000s the French artistic duo Gaillard & Claude has cultivated an art of absurd intrusion and poetic incidents, transposing Jacques Tati’s burlesque, noisy cinema into the postmodern society to reveal its contradictory injunctions in response to our apparent “hangover”. From plaster sculpture to polyurethane bas-relief and marbled paper to printed textiles, via electronic music and the dramatisation of their own works, Gaillard & Claude’s polymorphous approach achieves its coherence through the fact that its references all bathe in the same “cultural magma”, with its prevailing spatial confusion and temporal discordance. By extending Set Theory from its mathematical domain into aesthetics, Gaillard & Claude have proved to be past masters in the subtle art of double meaning and inference, paradoxical affinities and unexpected convergences, scientific formulas and vernacular expressions. Envisaged as their first retrospective in Belgium since the duo moved to Brussels in 2008, the exhibition at the MACS brings together the essential elements of their production through three bodies of work: Le Groupe et La Famille (2010), Orchestra (2015) and Baloney ! (2020).

UNESCO-site

The MACS, located on the former mine site of Grand-Hornu, high place of European industrial heritage, is classified as World Heritage since 2012. Since its opening, the museum has welcomed nearly a million visitors, produced over 75 exhibitions and promoted many artists from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Thanks to the great international artists who, like Anish Kapoor, Christian Boltanski, Giuseppe Penone and Tony Oursler, have set up their first major exhibition in Belgium, the MACS now enjoys a reputation that goes far beyond our borders.

LPeople with specific needs

Concerned to be everyone’s museum, MACS develops a humanist policy with the help of specialized associations that guide it in its approach. For example, a specific mediation approach has been developed for blind and partially sighted people. It is based on specific material tools such as models, thermoforms, musical fragments, Braille lyrics and the sensitive commentary of the guide accompanying the group. The museum also organizes guided tours adapted for the mentally handicapped.

JSchools

Immerse your students for a visit to contemporary art. The MACS cultural services team researches, invents and implements the most appropriate forms of mediation for each new exhibition. Don’t forget that the museum is free to the school crowd every 1st Wednesday of the month.
