This exhibition offers views of the citadel, from wide and panoramic shots to the details of a gate or a building, coloured at the time, which take us back to the so-called Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties, and take us on a walk along the roads and paths newly opened to tourists, after the partial demilitarisation of 1893 and until after the Second World War.

Historic site classified as exceptional heritage in Wallonia

The Citadel of Namur is a historic site classified as exceptional heritage in Wallonia.

Located at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse, the citadel is a public domain, open to walkers. Its panoramic views of the city and the valley of the Meuse are breathtaking.

Guided tours are also possible all year round from the Terra Nova Visitor Center. In this space, discover 2000 years of History of the city and citadel through video projections, models, visuals and other documents. Dive into the heart of history by visiting the tunnels of the citadel endowed since 2017 with a sound and light scenography. 3D effects, projections, sound allow you to understand the role and use of these galleries through the ages.

Finally, the commented tour by tourist train allows young and old to walk in the fortified area while listening to the historical commentary broadcast.

LPeople with specific needs

At Terra Nova, the starting point for the guided tours, the large parking area has specific areas for PRM vehicles. Within a few meters you can easily reach the Tourism Information Center, located on the ground floor of the Terra Nova barracks. In the same building you have access to the self-made “Made in Namur” and to the toilets, which have a specially adapted cabin. The Terra Nova Visitor Center is also located in the barracks. His scenography allows people with limited mobility to discover it easily.

Two tours:

  • The guided tour in the tourist train, which is equipped with driveways that allow you to install a wheelchair or a small electric car.
  • The visit of the underground galleries is proposed on mandatory reservation, at least two weeks in advance. Specially trained personnel will then accompany you to the depths of the Citadel with a joella system.
