Discover an authentic coal mine, recognized since 2012 as Unesco World Heritage

Located between Liège and Maastricht, Blegny-Mine is one of the four authentic coal mines in Europe with underground galleries accessible for visitors through the original shaft. Fitted with a jacket and a helm, take the mining cage down to -30 and -60 metres in order to understand how coal was extracted. Find out all about the fascinating lives of the “Black Faces” (the miners) and their tough working conditions. Look at the technical equipment underground, the coal and the noisy machinery. Finally, discover the process of sorting and washing coal until it is shipped.

Since July 2012, Blegny-Mine ans 3 other major mining sites in Wallonia (Bois du Cazier, Bois-du-Luc and Grand-Hornu) are recognized as Unesco World Heritage.

Blegny-Mine is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site and is one of the four authentic coal mines in Europe, whose underground galleries are accessible to visitors through the original well. Take your coat and helmet through the mine cage up to – 30 and – 60 meters below ground and experience the daily life of the “Gueules Noires” (black faces) during the visit. A unique experience!

Looking for field activities to address or illustrate a point in your topic? Our original, fun and educational animations will certainly help you with your approach. Our education team has developed 16 activities for children from 8 to 14 years old. They are grouped around five themes:

3. life in the city and in the countryside
4. live on and along the river
5. sport

Our goal is to enable students to understand the historical, technical, human and environmental aspects of a region. In addition to this desire to deepen children’s knowledge by confronting them with both theory and practice, our educational approach is also focused, especially during stays, to make them aware of community life. The concepts of cooperation, attention, adaptation and respect for the environment will become increasingly well-known.
