Domain of Fourneau Saint-Michel
A remarkable architectural ensemble located in the heart of the Ardennes forest
The Fourneau Saint-Michel Provincial Domain consists of two separate but complementary entities: the Iron Museum and the Museum of Rural Life in Wallonia.
The Iron Museum houses the only charcoal blast furnace preserved in situ in Belgium. The buildings, which bear remarkable witness to a thriving iron industry in Luxembourg in the 17th and 18th centuries, give visitors the chance to discover the techniques used to make cast iron and to appreciate the importance and use of iron in everyday life in the past. It is a 2.0 museum that uses new technologies: touch screens, videos… A museum that talks about the past, but in a modern way.
The Open Air Museum and its 40 hectares are dedicated to rural life in Wallonia and the preservation of built heritage. This mission is accomplished by transplanting buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, which you discover while strolling through an exceptional setting. School, chapel, print shop, bread oven, shop… Learn more about the daily life of our elders and their traditions, especially thanks to the many collectibles on display!
