Folklore Museum of Mouscron (MUSEF)

The museum tour is full of discoveries and surprises, and let you immerse yourself in the life on the border (Wallonia Picardy / West Flanders / Northern France). This is represented by rich collections of objects, documents and testimonials. The reference to the daily life of the working class and the bourgeoisie (furniture, household objects …), the professions (from the hunger wages to the craftsmen, from the farmer to the weaver, from the bricklayer to the wooden shoe maker …), commercial proliferation (groceries, staminets and fraud on both sides of the border), textile knowledge, the many traditions related to leisure and festivities, are exposed as witnesses of the mixing of populations and the emergence of an interesting cultural identity consisting of several singularities.

The MUSEF unfolds in a setting of contemporary architecture (nomination for the Mies van der Rohe Award, Grand Prix for architecture of Wallonia and triennial Ianchelevici prize 2019) and offers an innovative scenography. It is positioned as a museum of society, a reference in regional ethnology!

The museum also offers temporary exhibitions, numerous activities, heritage workshops, extracurricular internships and events. A landscaped garden and a documentation center are also available for visitors.

OGroups

Depending on your wishes, we offer guided tours, thematic workshops on heritage, discovery tours … “as a fixed offer or tailor-made”.

JSchools

The animations are accessible from the age of 5. The educational department invents numerous activities in immersion, fun courses, in which students are involved in their discoveries (including 20 different heritage workshops). The guidance is also suitable for special, technical and vocational education. A program is aimed at students from higher secondary education, colleges and universities (in particular architecture faculties, museum studies). The reception is flexible, depending on demand: from 50 minutes to a full day of activities at the Museum. Possibility of picnicking.

KFamilies

Two new discovery courses are offered during the year. Playful devices stimulate the 5 senses, making the museum a friendly place: “families allowed”.

PSeniors

The collections do not only remind the senior citizen of childhood memories, but they also bring a whole host of new discoveries. The activities are organized with a view to relaxation but also to well-being, in therapeutic guidance (memory workshops, Alzheimer’s coffee …).

MCompanies

The museum is spread over various locations (new infrastructure, home of heritage events, garden and pavilion) allowing for activities for conferences and team building.

LPeople with specific needs

The Museum is fully adapted for people with reduced mobility and wheelchairs. Free parking spaces and a bus drop-off are located close to the museum. The environment is set up for the PRM (Persons with reduced mobility).

Visits, activities and heritage workshops are specially designed for people with specific needs (newcomers, residents of retirement homes, visitors with intellectual disabilities, the deaf, hard of hearing, visually impaired …).

As from 2020, the museum will offer a sign language course and an easy to read course.
